The Vega launch vehicle was successfully launched from the Guiana Space Centre, Kourou, French Guiana on June 23, 2015 at 4:51 Kiev time. The launch vehicle injected the ESA-developed satellite, Sentinel-2A, into near-Earth orbit. It weighs 1100 kg.

Yuzhnoye SDO designed and Yuzhmash PA manufactured the RD-843 main engine for the upper (fourth) stage of this launch vehicle.

The satellite was injected for the Copernicus Environmental Monitoring Program. This program was initiated by the European Commission in partnership with
the European Space Agency (ESA) to give Europe an independent multilevel system for monitoring of the Earth environmental situation.

The satellite’s mission is to monitor forests, coastal areas and waters, and agricultural lands. The satellite applications also include map-making of snow- and ice-covered lands and disaster relief support.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is a launch customer, and Airbus is a satellite manufacturer.

The satellite separated from the launch vehicle 54 minutes after liftoff.
Followed by two reignitions, the upper stage delivered the satellite into
a 786-km sun-synchronous orbit, and the Sentinel-2A separated then.

The spacecraft operational lifespan is 7.25 years.

The light-lift Vega launch vehicle has been launched from the Guiana Space Centre since 2012. It was designed by the ESA specialists to deliver lightweight spacecraft into orbits. Depending on its parameters, the Vega is capable of injecting
300 to 1500 kg payloads into the low-Earth orbit.

It was the fifth mission in the Vega performance history. The next Vega launch is scheduled for September, 2015.
